The Thracians, the ancient Hellas, the Roman Empire and the Byzantine, all of them left their mark o n the atmosphere in this town. The stone anchors, ceramic pottery, bone tools and rich necropolises are evidence of a highly developed culture.
The ancient icons and magnificent wood carved iconostases are high achievements of craftsmanship from the time of the Bulgarian Renaissance. The old churches, the authentic stone and wooden houses, the narrow cobbled streets are characteristic for their architecture and are under the special protection of the UNESCO World Heritage Program.
Sozopol is a famous cultural centre since ancient times with traditions extended to nowadays. Annually, in the beginning of the autumn, the Apollonia Arts Festival is held – ten days of music, theatre, dances and concerts of famous Bulgarian and international artists.
